Flashpoint Movie’s Fate Rumored to Be Tied to Justice League’s Success

DC Extended Universe has distinguished itself from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in announcing multiple standalone films for characters well in advance, including Aquman, Cyborg and The Flash. Of course, not everything has unfolded as planned, with The Flash delayed by the loss of two directors, only to seemingly to move back on track over the summer with news of a new title, Flashpoint, and presumably a new story. Since then, though, there’s been little public movement, even as other projects pick up steam, and now we may know why.

Appearing on Meet the Movie Press, Variety reporter Justin Kroll revealed that Warner Bros. is said to be waiting to see how well Justice League performs both financially and critically before moving forward with multiple films a year. That appears o be the reason the search for directors for Flashpoint and other DC films have slowed.

Tracking places Justice League on a course to open domestically next month with an estimated $110 million to $120 million, and while that’s nothing to shrug off, that would place it below Batman v Superman‘s $166 million opening and possibly behind Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, which experts expect could reach $125 million next weekend. Of course, tracking is fickle, and as we’ve seen with Wonder Woman and now Thor: Ragnarok, positive buzz have a dramatic effect on box office receipts. Should Justice League prove to be a critical success, it could go on to outperform current estimates and be the success that the studio has been hoping for.

Flashpoint stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Billy Crudup as Henry Allen, Ray Fisher as Cyborg and possibly Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. Originally intended to hit theaters on March 16, 2018, when it was titled simply The Flash, the film currently has no release date.
