Waititi’s Akira Would Adapt The Manga, Not Anime

With Thor: Ragnarok winning the praise of critics and fans alike, some are beginning to wonder what director Taika Waititi’s approach to the Akira adaptation would look like. According to Waititi himself, he would adapt the manga, not the classic anime film. In an interview with ScreenRant, Waititi said that adapting the anime would enable him to put his unique stamp on the film.

“I always felt like it was something that could do with a unique take,” he explained. “I don’t believe the world needs a remake of the anime. I think, for me, it would be — if there’s any real possibility for doing it — I would really just want to look at an adaptation of the books in a new way.”

The quote “if there’s any real possibility doing it” is something fans should take seriously; currently, there’s no guarantee Waititi will helm an Akira film. However, Waititi confirmed that he’s been talking “a little bit” with the studio behind the project.

“I don’t know, it’s sort of early days really I’m just kind of entertaining that conversation because I’ve been a huge fan of that property for a long time,” he said.

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Tess Thompson, Jess Goldblum and more, Waititi’s latest film Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters November 2.
