DC Launches New Young Reader and Middle Grade Imprints


The first details of DC’s much-buzzed-about “Young Readers” line surfaced today to a surprising revelation: the comics publisher is doing not one, but two new young reader-focused imprints. The first, DC Ink, will be geared towards YA audiences while the second, DC Zoom, will be focused on middle grade readers. Both will be overseen by executive editor Bobbie Chase.

DC Ink’s initial line up includes Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass, by Mariko Tamaki (Supergirl: Being Super) and Steve Pugh (The Flintstones), and Mera by Danielle Paige (Dorothy Must Die).

DC Zoom boasts a slate of including YA authors like Laurie Halse Anderson (Speak), Melissa de la Cruz (the Descendants series), Michael Northrop (TombQuest) and Ridley Pearson (the Kingdom Keepers series). Though most of the DC Zoom graphic novels will be published in their completed format first, Gene Leun Yang will be writing Superman Smashes The Klan as a periodical that will be later collected up as a trade.

Zoom books will run around 128 pages and have a price point of $9.99, while Ink books will fall just shy of 200 pages and have a price point of $16.99.

Ridley Pearson’s project, Super Sons will feature the current cast of the Super Sons comic, but will be “free of the elaborate continuity” of their comics counterparts, according to Chase in the New York Times. Chase elaborated “They are character studies, not necessarily superhero stories.”

Both lines are scheduled to hit shelves this fall.
