Black Panther’s IMAX Pre-Sales Beat All Other Marvel Movies

T’Challa has claimed yet another throne, as director Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther has now sold more IMAX advance tickets sold than any previous Marvel Studios film.

“We have a movie that has clearly captured the zeitgeist,” IMAX Entertainment CEO Greg Foster told Variety. “Pre-sales are the surest way to see how momentum is going: The momentum is gathering steam as opposed to slowing down.”

While Foster elected not to share specific figures, he did say the surefire box-office his shows no signs of slowing down. “A movie often peaks 10 days before it opens,” he added. “This movie feels like it’s going to peak the day it opens. It’s remarkable. There are no borders on this. The momentum is continuing on both coasts and in the middle; in red states and in blue states. In giant cities and smaller suburbs.”

The latest projects place Black Panther on track to earn $165 million in its U.S. opening weekend, up from the $150 million estimate from just a week and a half earlier. Should those numbers hold, it could land among the five largest opening weekends ever for a superhero film.
