Blair Witch Project TV Series in Development

Lionsgate’s newly launched Studio L banner is developing television series based on the found-footage horror phenomenon The Blair Witch Project.

Deadline reports the project is one of several in development from the new studio, which is focused primarily on creating digital content that appeals to younger audiences. Information about the new series is sparse, but Studio L has three film projects already set to release this spring so fans may have to wait a bit longer before details emerge.

BLAIR WITCH REVIEW: The Sloppy Sequel No One Asked For

Released in 1999, The Blair Witch Project told the fictional story of three student filmmakers who disappeared in 1994 in rural Maryland while making a documentary about a local legend known as the Blair Witch. Only their equipment, and much of the footage they shot, is discovered, and is ultimately pieced together to make the film

Despite the massive success of the original, which grossed more than $248 million worldwide, a 2000 sequel, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, was widely panned (it did, however, earn $47.7 million off a production budget of $15 million). A 2016 reboot, Blair Witch, ignored the events of Book of Shadows and instead served as a direct sequel to the original. However, even a return to the series’ found-footage roots wasn’t enough to get fans on board for the new direction.

The news of a Blair Witch Project TV series arrives just months after co-director Eduardo Sánchez teased that he and the original creative team were working on a television series for Lionsgate. Given Studio L’s mission to create digital content, it seems likely that we’ll see the series debut on some sort of streaming service.
