DCTV’s Berlanti Offers Update on Booster Gold Movie

It has been nearly two years since it was announced that X-Men: First Class co-writer Zack Stentz had been hired to write a Booster Gold film for Warner Bros. and DC Films. The movie, which was meant to serve as the directorial debut of DCTV super producer Greg Berlanti, was expected to replace the previously announced Booster Gold/Blue Beetle film. Unfortunately, movement on the project has been essentially nonexistent since, although according to Berlanti the project is still very much in development.

While promoting his directorial debut, Love, Simon, Berlanti spoke to the folks at The Wrap about the Booster Gold project and why we haven’t heard anything since the initial announcement. According to the creative, Booster Gold is still very much in development at the studio.

“I wrote a draft, they’re trying to figure out both the distance that we still have to travel and how we want to execute it,” he explained. He also said that they’re currently trying to figure out how the film fits in with the greater DC Extended Universe. Despite previously saying the film will exist outside of the main DC Universe, it appears as though plans have changed and the film will now exist in DCEU continuity.

As to whether or not he still intends on directing the project, Berlanti says he’s willing to do so but that it’s ultimately up to the studio to decide.

“If the studio is excited — it’s obviously their determination. We finished all the work we need to do on the draft, I would love to do something in that space. I’m still a little clueless on how movies come together. I show up to work every day and make the work as good as I can but then they call me and say, ‘We’re making it!’”

Prior to his involvement with the film, Berlanti had attempted to bring Booster Gold to life on the small screen. The series was previously in development at Syfy, with Berlanti on board as an executive producer alongside former Supergirl and Arrow producer Andrew Kreisberg. That project never made it past the pilot stage, however.

Created by Dan Jurgens for his self-titled series, Booster Gold went on to gain widespread recognition as a member of the Justice League and Justice League International, before going on to appear in Jurgens’ “Death of Superman” storyline. Booster has made one previous live-action appearance, portrayed by actor Eric Martsolf on Smallville.
