New Mutants Moie Star Confirms Addition of New Character

The release of Fox’s X-Men spinoff The New Mutants was delayed 10 months, from April to February 2019, to enable reshoots that will reportedly ratchet up the horror elements and add another character to the cast.

Now star Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays Illyana Rasputin, has confirmed the new character, but stopped short of saying who, or what, it is. Speaking with The Playlist, Taylor-Joy said she’s disappointment by the delay, but thinks some good could come out of it. “I do think that there is a great responsibility to make sure the movie is done right … hopefully, all of these reshoots and adding of the new character that will give the fans an altogether satisfactory, wonderful product.”

The sixth character has been heavily speculated to be Warlock, a mutant with the ability to change shapes and turn organic matter into techno-organic matter. He first was introduced in 1984 in Marvel Comics’ New Mutants, and served as a member of the team for quite some time. More recently in the comics, he helped Sunspot, a fellow New Mutant who’s also in the film, turn into the president of the United States and defeat the villainous Maker.

Arriving in theaters Feb. 22, 2019, director Josh Boone’s The New Mutants stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (Atlantis) as Magik, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Cannonball, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Dani Moonstar and Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Sunspot.
