Marvel Doubted Whether Thor Could Work On the Big Screen

Zak Penn played a big role in the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having written the original script for 2012’s The Avengers. According to Penn, Marvel Studios originally had doubts about whether the God of Thunder would work on the big screen, so early drafts of his film reduced the character’s role.

“Originally I was trying to reduce how much Thor was in the movie,” Penn told The Hollywood Reporter. “Once it was clear that, no, this is going to work and they were excited about it, then I did not [reduce Thor in the script]. I stopped doing that.”

According to Penn, casting Chris Hemsworth as Thor changed all that. “I remember Chris Hemsworth walking through the Marvel offices,” Penn recalled, “and being, ‘Oh, my god, that guy is Thor.’”

Hemsworth himself almost passed on the role, citing the time commitment involved. Although the actor’s contract ended with Avengers 4, he has since left open the possibility of returning as the God of Thunder.

Director Joss Whedon claims to have thrown out Penn’s draft and started from scratch. Despite his draft being thrown out, Penn still received a story credit on the film and has since conceded that Whedon’s version “turned out better.”

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Bettany, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Tom Hiddleston and Josh Brolin, among others. The film hits theaters April 27.
