Rick and Morty Enter the World of Dungeons & Dragons in New Comic

The worlds of Rick and Morty and Dungeons & Dragons are about to collide.

IDW Publishing and Oni Press will bring together the high jinks of Rick and Morty and the fantasy adventure of Dungeons & Dragons in a four-issue comic series set to debut in August. Announced Sunday at C2E2, the series’ creative team includes Patrick Rothfuss (The Kingkiller Chronicles), Jim Zub (Avengers: No Surrender) and Troy Little (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas).

Nestled neatly into the high-concept mania of Rick and Morty, this new adventure will send the titular duo into a “high-fantasy adventure blended with the wit, humor and intelligence the show is widely celebrated for.”

“I love Rick and Morty with a powerful love, and I’ve played D&D since the fifth grade,” Rothfuss said in a statement. “So when they approached me about writing a story with both of them together? That’s some serious you-got-chocolate-in-my-peanut butter $#!& right there. I’m in. I’m all the way in. I’m gettin’ that chocolate all up in the peanut butter. Like, deep in. All the way in. It’s going to be sticky and delicious.”

The plot kicks off when Morty asks Rick for advice about Dungeons & Dragons because the kids at his school are playing the game. And as Rick and Morty fans can likely predict, things don’t exactly go as planned. But Zub said he’s looking forward to introducing the Smith family to the world of D&D.

“The Dungeons & Dragons crew is letting Pat and I open a Pandora’s Box of insane adventure material and iconic creatures from the granddaddy of all tabletop role-playing games,” he said. “I wish I could say we’ll take good care of it, but, the simple truth is, this is Rick and Morty we’re talking about. No fantasy world or otherworldly plane of existence is safe.”

Each issue will have plenty for fans of both properties to dig into, including character sheets and variant covers.
