Glover, Solo Writers Discuss Film’s Place in Morally Ambiguous World

The creative team behind Solo: A Star Wars Movie has indicated the morally ambiguous world we live in today definitely informed director Ron Howard’s origin story featuring everyone’s favorite space smuggler.

During Saturday’s Solo press conference, the film’s writers, as well as Donald Glover (who plays Lando Calrissian), made it clear that as much as it’s set in a galaxy far, far away, Solo isn’t too big of a fantasy movie, given how relatable it is to our society, which constantly seeks out hope.

When asked if it was tough crafting Han’s shady environments, veteran Star Wars writer Lawrence Kasdan said, “That’s not too difficult in the world we live in. We’re swimming in it every day. People we admire can do things we don’t admire, that we’re driven by forces that we may not be proud of. And then sometimes we rise to the occasion, doing the right thing. That world, for me, is the world we live in.”

Lawrence’s son, Jonathan Kasdan, noted the conflict that drives Han throughout the movie, with the smuggler constantly at war with his ideals and desires. The younger Kasdan added, “Star Wars has been a very classic story of the dark and the light, good and evil. What was exciting to us about writing this was to really make a character movie where every character has ambiguity to them.” He referenced the new world that A New Hope offered him as a young creative, and made it clear he wanted to tell a specific story where “the world that we live in is reflected in our art.”

These sentiments were echoed by Glover as he talked up the complexities of the criminal terrain he and Han have to navigate in the film. “I love that there are rich and poor people in this movie. I just love it. You get to see why Han is complicated,” he said. “Even by the end — maybe he did the wrong thing for the right reason, or the right thing for the wrong reason. That’s how everybody has to live. It’s a rough world out there.”

Directed by Ron Howard from a script by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, Solo: A Star Wars Story stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke as Qi’ra and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. They’re joined by Thandie Newton as Val, Phoebe Waller-Bridge L3-37, Paul Bettany as Dryden Vos, and Woody Harrelson as Tobias Beckett. The film opens May 25.
