Deadpool Has ‘Somewhat Fluid’ Sexuality, Says Reynolds

At a press conference in Spain, Deadpool himself Ryan Reynolds and Cable actor Josh Brolin offered some insight into Deadpool 2. When one reporter asked if the Merc with the Mouth would be the big screen’s first queer superhero, Reynolds replied that the character’s sexuality is “somewhat fluid.”

“I think Deadpool’s sort of somewhat fluid. You know, Deadpool’s a guy that there’s a lot of room in that,” Reynolds said. “He’s in love with Vanessa. Vanessa’s the love of his life and that’s a key part of our story and that’s the bedrock of everything that happens to Deadpool.”

The actor also acknowledged the character’s flirtation on screen and on page with people (and unicorns) of all genders. “You see he sort of exhibits these qualities throughout the course of each film. He’s a guy that’s sort of unpredictable,” he added.

Deadpool’s sexuality has become more debated as the character continues to gain popularity. Reynolds has previously expressed interest in portraying a more overtly pansexual Deadpool, and Deadpool 2 director David Liech said that “everything in the world of Deadpool is possible” when presented with a similar question.

Directed by David Leitch, Deadpool 2 features Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus, and Karan Soni as Dopinder, with newcomers Zazie Beetz as Domino, Josh Brolin as Cable, Julian Dennison as Russell and Jack Kesy as Black Tom Cassidy. The film arrives Friday in theaters nationwide.
