Marvel’s Original Five X-Men Animation Test Clip

X-Men: The Animated Series still holds a special place in the hearts of loyal fans of Marvel’s merry mutants, but an animation test clip that’s surfaced online may make you forget about the popular 1990s Fox series.

The short video by Samuel Deats of Powerhouse Animation shows Charles Xavier’s original five X-Men of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Angel and Iceman displaying their mutant abilities, all while wearing the costumes from their debut in 1963’s The X-Men #1.

A post to Deats’ Tumblr page credits his Powerhouse Animation crew with providing clean up and color, while he took care of the design and rough animation. Even though it’s a short test clip, it still encapsulates the vibrant, youthful energy of the X-Men, along with demonstrating each individual’s special abilities. The only thing that’s missing is an appearance by the Master of Magnetism and the X-Men’s greatest enemy, Magneto.

Someone else missing is Professor Charles Xavier, who recruited the young mutants to help them harness their powers, while also fighting to make the world safe for both humans and mutants alike. While animating a man in a wheelchair might not seem flashy, Cerebro and the astral plane could offer up a chance for a lot of creative freedom.

Though it only spans a couple of seconds, the X-Men animation test clip goes to show why the heroes are some of the most popular characters in the Marvel Universe.
