X-Force Director Didn’t Know the Team Would Die in Deadpool 2

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Deadpool 2, in theaters now.

X-Force director Drew Goddard admits that, just like audiences, he was blindsided by the “surprise” fate awaiting the team’s initial lineup in Deadpool 2.

In the Fox sequel, Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson assembled X-Force to prevent Cable from killing a young mutant, but as soon as the team leaped into action, everyone except Deadpool and Domino met a grisly death. Goddard, however, took it all in stride, as he didn’t want his X-Force plans to hinder what director David Leitch was doing.

“What I love most about what Ryan [Reynolds] and his crew over there was able to do with the Deadpool movies is bring this certain sense of surprise and danger,” Goddard told Entertainment Weekly. “You walk into those movies, and you really don’t know what’s going to happen.”

“I remember reading that scene and just cackling with delight, specifically because it was the very last thing you’d expect to happen in one of these movies,” he added. “These movies are so careful to set up the next thing and the next thing, and it made me so happy.”

Goddard actually consulted on Deadpool 2’s script, and said its chain of events won’t hinder his plans for the team. Many fans assumed this iteration of X-Force would inform Goddard’s film, but as it turns out, the only core members he needs for his story are Cable, Domino and Deadpool, of course, in a plot that’s still relatively unknown.

“One thing I said to Ryan was, ‘Don’t worry about it, we’ll come up with new ideas; you guys go make your movie, and do your thing. We’ll figure it out,’” Goddard said. “That tends to be the way I like to work. It’s much more important to focus on making the movie that you’re making than focusing on the next thing. It’s much more important to just make one good movie and take your time, then let that dictate what the movies are after.”

Directed by David Leitch, Deadpool 2 stars Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus, and Karan Soni as Dopinder, with newcomers Zazie Beetz as Domino, Josh Brolin as Cable and Julian Dennison as Russell. The film is playing in theaters everywhere.
