Benedict Cumberbatch Saved a Man from Four Muggers

Even when the cameras aren’t rolling, actor Benedict Cumberbatch still leaps into action to save the day.

The Academy Award-nominated actor stopped in mid-transit from his Uber ride to chase away four muggers attacking a defenseless delivery biker in the streets of London over the weekend.

The actor and his wife, Sophia Hunter, were taking an Uber to a London nightclub when the car came across a cyclist for the British food delivery service Deliveroo being assaulted by four muggers, who broke a bottle across the biker’s head and began punching him.

According to driver Manuel Dias, Cumberbatch left his ride shouting at the attackers to “leave [the man] alone”. The muggers then turned their attention to Cumberbatch, who managed to fend them off with the help of Dias. After the attackers fled the scene, Cumberbatch checked to make sure the unnamed cyclist was alright and comforted him before authorities arrived.

“Benedict was courageous, brave and selfless. If he hadn’t stepped in the cyclist could have been seriously injured,” Dias said in an interview with The Sun. “He asked the rider how he was and when he said, ‘I’m OK’ Benedict just hugged him.”

Cumberbatch, who fights fictional crime on the small screen as the title character of BBC’s Sherlock and defends the Earth on the big screen as Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange, downplayed his real-life heroics.

“I did it out of, well, I had to, you know . . .” said the acclaimed actor about stopping the assault, according to Dias. “He seemed to know exactly what he was doing. He was very brave. He did most of it, to be honest.”

Audiences can currently see Cumberbatch save the universe from Thanos as Doctor Strange in Avengers: Infinity War, in theaters now.
