Avengers Star Jeremy Renner’s Broken Arms Were Digitally Replaced in Tag

Last year, when it was revealed that actor Jeremy Renner had broken both of his arms, many had thought the injuries had come on the set of Avengers: Infinity War. Of course, as we now know, Renner’s injuries actually came from his other film — you know, one that he actually appeared in — Tag. So, how does a feature film go about finishing production when one of its leads has multiple broken bones? With the help of some CGI, of course.

During an interview with Jon Hamm on Ellen, the actor briefly discussed Renner’s injury, revealing that the event took place just three days into production and resulted in plenty of panic among those involved with the film. However, the most interesting bit of information came when Ellen asked if production was temporarily halted to allow for Renner to heal. According to Hamm, rather than shut down production, Renner instead wore what he describes as “green screen casts” that allowed the visual effects team to erase the casts in post-production.

Thankfully, Renner’s arms have since healed and the actor has gone on to finish filming on Avengers 4, where his arms will more than likely not be digitally altered in post-production. Here’s to hoping Renner’s arms look better than Henry Cavill’s edited upper lip in Justice League.

Tag, which is said to be based on a real-life group of friends that organize an elaborate, annual game of tag, was directed by Jeff Tomsic. The film stars Jeremy Renner, Isla Fisher, Jon Hamm, Jake Johnson, Leslie Bibb, Ed Helms, Hannibal Buress and Annabelle Wallis. The film is set to hit theaters on June 15.
