Samuel L. Jackson Wanted to Be in Black Panther

Samuel L. Jackson wasn’t in Black Panther, but he certainly wanted to be.

During Samuel L. Jackson’s most recent appearance on The Ellen Show, host Ellen Degeneres brought up Black Panther, which hit theaters this past February. “It’s a great movie. But I couldn’t believe you weren’t in it,” she said, to which Jackson replied, “I couldn’t either.”

Jackson had apparently hoped his character would be a way to introduce the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the once-hidden nation of Wakanda, but nothing involving Nick Fury was set into motion. “I mean, Nick Fury knows every black thing that’s on the planet, so he’s gotta know about Wakanda,” he insisted.

“I wish I had been there, but I’m really, really, really pleased with the success of that film and how it worked out,” he added.

In the MCU, Jackson plays one of the figures responsible for the formation of the Avengers: superspy and former S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury. He most recently reprised the role for the end credits sequence of Avengers: Infinity War, where he sent out a signal to Captain Marvel just before he crumbled to dust.

Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan as N’Jadaka/Erik “Killmonger” Stevens, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Forest Whitaker as Zuri and Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue. It is currently available on digital, Blu-ray and DVD.
