Matt Reeves to Reboot The Batman Franchise and Replace Ben Affleck

Following months of speculation, reports are suggesting that the curtain is set to finally fall on Ben Affleck’s tenure as the Dark Knight, with director Matt Reeves looking to cast a new Batman for his solo film and reboot the franchise altogether.

Rumors have long persisted that Reeves was looking elsewhere for a new Caped Crusader after Affleck’s lukewarm reception in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, and according to Deadline, he just may have gotten his wish.

The report suggests Reeves will be rebooting Batman for a standalone franchise, leaving fans wondering how this will tie into the DC Extended Universe, which is already rolling on with familiar faces in Aquaman, Wonder Woman 2 and purportedly, The Flash’s solo film.

In the past, Affleck has had to deny rumors he would be stepping away from the cowl, although Reeves was said to be looking at Jake Gyllenhaal to take up Bruce Wayne’s mantle. As per the report, Warner Bros. wants to walk back from Zack Snyder’s gritty vision of Batman, which became the target of several critics, internet jokes and, well, Deadpool 2.

It’s believed that new chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group Toby Emmerich wants to continue along the lighthearted, inspirational feel of Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, as he’s intent on moving past the failure of Snyder’s grim Justice League team-up.
