Stark Trek Franchise Expands With Plans for New TV Series & Animation

Mere days after he was named as new showrunner of Star Trek: Discovery, writer/producer Alex Kurtzman has renewed his overall deal with CBS Television Studios in an agreement that calls for him to oversee the expansion of the franchise with series, miniseries and even animation.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kurtzman’s five-year extension is estimated to be worth $25 million.

Kurtzman, who co-wrote the 2009 big-screen reboot of Star Trek and co-created the franchise’s television revival, was named showrunner of CBS All Access’ Discovery following the firing of Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg amid accusations that they’d harassed the show’s writers. Kurtzman will begin oversight of the drama with the sixth episode of Season 2, now in production.

“There is a very short list of writer-producer-directors that every film and television studio wants to be associated with, and Alex and his Secret Hideout team are always at the top,” David Stapf, president of CBS Television Studios, said in a statement. “His talent, taste and ability to shepherd a successful project is unparalleled. Alex has done remarkable work for our Studio, dating back seven years to the launch of Hawaii Five-0, and we are thrilled that he, Heather and their team will be partnering with us for a long time to come.”

Kurtzman is perhaps best known for his film and television collaboration with longtime partner Roberto Orci, with whom he worked on such projects as The Island, Mission: Impossible III, the Transformers franchise, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Fringe and Sleepy Hollow. However, the duo ended their movie partnership in 2014, leading Kurtzman to direct Universal Pictures’ The Mummy, and oversee the studio’s Dark Universe plans with Chris Morgan. They left Universal in November.
