James Gunn Doesn’t Believe Spoilers Can Ruin A Good Movie

James Gunn, writer and director of Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy films, has stepped into the long-running debate over spoilers, a typically loaded subject among fans.

“If a movie can be ruined by spoilers, it’s not a good movie,” Gunn, who is also an executive producer on Avengers: Infinity War and its untitled sequel, tweeted. He then clarified that he wasn’t about to be the one issuing spoilers for those who didn’t want them: “I’m opposed to spoiling things for folks, but studies show knowing spoilers only very slightly affects the viewer’s pleasure, if at all…”

Responses to his perspective are varied, with some fans objecting that studies didn’t mean anything compared to their own feelings of disappointment when a movie was spoiled for them. Others pointed to specific films that contained major surprises, including Infinity War, which ended with the villain of the piece achieving his goal to catastrophic effect.

He recently spoke up against negativity toward the cast and crew of beloved franchises, most recently Star Wars when unpopular decisions in the production of new films cause extreme reactions from viewers.

Avengers: Infinity War is in theaters now and will be followed by its sequel, the still untitled Avengers 4, next year. Gunn’s next project, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, which will begin filming in January and be released in 2020.
