Civil War Sequence Important to Avengers 4

Avengers 4 director Joe Russo revealed that he and his co-director Anthony Russo placed a sequence in Captain America: Civil War that will hint at the direction of the upcoming film.

On MTV‘s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Joe Russo explained that it would be beneficial for fans to rewatch Civil War if they are looking for ideas about Avengers 4‘s direction. “Certainly, there is a five minute sequence in Civil War around a piece of technology that was laid in for a very specific reason,” he teased. “If you go back and look at that film, you may get a hint as to the direction.”

Russo is likely referring to Tony Stark’s Binary Augmented Retro-Framing (B.A.R.F.) technology. In Civil War, Stark demonstrated the technology to MIT students, using it to recreate the last time he saw his parents alive. Recent set photos from Avengers 4 show an orange briefcase with the words “Binary Augmented Retro-Framing” scrawled across it on masking tape, which suggests it will be brought back in the film.

“It’s interesting because photos always leak, and there’s lots of conjecture about what those photos mean,” Russo added. It has been suggested that some of the set photos are, in fact, fake and are being used to purposefully mislead fans.

At this point, only one thing remains certain: the title of the fourth Avengers film won’t be revealed until some time after Infinity War is released. “We’re gonna sit on that until we feel the time is right and when people have absorbed the first movie enough,” Russo shared.

The untitled sequel to Avengers: Infinity War will release on May 3, 2019. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland and Anthony Mackie. The film opens May 4, 2018.
