Death Note Audio Drama Confirmed

Despite the critical panning of Netflix’s Death Note adaptation, things are rolling on as fast as ever for the popular Japanese property with a 12-hour audio drama series now in the works. According to Anime News Network, German publisher Lübbe will be responsible for adapting the Death Note story in both English and German.

However, the adaptation will draw on the anime adaptation of Death Note, and not the manga itself. Writer and translator Jonathan Clements will be overseeing this new adaptation of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s storyline.

The original manga ran from 2003 to 2006 and focused on the story of a high school student who stumbles across a supernatural notebook that allows him kill anyone simply by writing their name in its pages. He sets out to cleanse the world of evil, which puts him on a collision course with an enigmatic detective named L.

Death Note is a global phenomenon that inspired light novels, video games, a series of live-action films in Japan, a musical and an avalanche of merchandise, all prior to Adam Wingard’s Netflix movie. His film drew heat when it was first announced that the story’s setting would be changed from Japan to the United States, with calls of whitewashing not far behind.

Over at Rotten Tomatoes, it currently holds a 42% critical rating and a 25% audience rating, though Wingard is keen on bringing a sequel to life. That means Death Note fans could have quite a few upcoming adaptations to sink their teeth into.
