Donald Glover Leaks Script for Canceled Deadpool Cartoon

After receiving a straight to series order last year, fans were surprised to learn that FX and Donald Glover had exited the previously announced Deadpool animated series for FXX. Nevertheless, that hasn’t stopped Glover from taking to social media to leak an apparent script for the scrapped cartoon show.

Beginning a Twitter thread by clarifying that he wasn’t too busy to work on Deadpool: The Animated Series, Glover proceeded to post page after page of the script for an episode titled “Finale.” Packed with the Merc with a Mouth’s unique brand of humor and profanity, the script also explicitly mentions the show being canceled. This, of course, calls into question whether it’s a legitimate example of Deadpool’s metatextual commentary or Glover airing his own personal grievances. However, given the character’s tendency to break the fourth wall, the former is highly probable.

This past weekend, FX issued a statement that cited creative differences between the network and the creative team as the reason for the cancellation. “Due to creative differences, FX, Donald Glover, Stephen Glover and Marvel Television have agreed to part ways on Marvel’s Deadpool animated series,” FX said in its statement. “FX will no longer be involved with the project. FX and Marvel have an ongoing relationship through our partnership on Legion, which will continue.”

Glover was set to write the 10-episode series alongside his brother Stephen. However, should the project find a home elsewhere, the duo is not expected to be involved. As of right now, it remains to be seen if Marvel Television opts to shop the project to other networks, or perhaps even save it for Disney’s forthcoming streaming service.

Created in 1991 by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza, Deadpool has not only been a mainstay of Marvel comic books, but also a somewhat regular in Marvel’s various animated projects over the years, with appearances on X-Men: The Animated Series, Ultimate Spider-Man and Hulk Vs Wolverine.
