Early Solo Box Office Projections Similar to Rogue One’s Numbers

While buzz for Solo: A Star Wars Story hasn’t necessarily been great following the departure of original directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the film looks set to perform as well as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

According to Box Office Pro, the latest Star Wars prequel looks set to open to $150 million when it opens in May. While that’s nowhere near the opening numbers of either Star Wars: The Force Awakens or Star Wars: The Last Jedi, that is in line with Rogue One‘s opening back in 2016. That film went on to earn $155 million over its first three days before ending its theatrical run with $1 billion at the global box office.

Interestingly enough, like with Rogue One, Solo has endured its fair share of rumors regarding behind-the-scenes drama during production. As fans will remember, Rogue One underwent what was reported to be extensive reshoots ahead of release. That left many worried for the production, fearful that it was a mess that Disney was trying to salvage in Post Production. Of course, those reshoots were nothing when compared to the behind the scenes drama surrounding Solo. The film parted ways with Miller & Lord halfway through production, later bringing in director Ron Howard to finish the movie.

With Lucasfilm only beginning to market the film, many expected box office estimates to be low, especially given all of the rumors surrounding the production. However, the long range forecast seems to those issues are not currently harming the film’s box office projections. Of course, as this is a long range forecast, estimates can — and probably will — change closer to the film’s release. We’ll have a better idea of how well the film will perform when it’s about three-weeks out from release, when official estimates begin to hit.
