GOTG Vol. 2 Scene Gunn Fought to Keep

It’s a given that films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will have epic post-credits sequences, but that doesn’t mean that the directors don’t have to fight for those scenes. Writer-director James Gunn recently revealed to CinemaBlend that he had to do just that for the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 post-credits that introduced Adam Warlock to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The director stated, “I had to fight for Adam in the post-credits sequence. Because I really thought that’s where that should go. And I thought one of the main reasons to have the Sovereign [Ayesha’s villainous unit] in the movie was to give audiences the hint that Adam Warlock is coming. That was one of the reasons for them to exist. And I wrote that post-credits sequence in the first draft of the script.”

Many fans expected Warlock to be introduced earlier in the MCU, due to his comics history with Thanos, to coincide with the Mad Titan’s arrival in Avengers: Infinity War, but Gunn affirmed that he will be kept for the third GOTG movie. In the introductory scene, a downtrodden Ayesha (played by Elizabeth Debicki) revealed the storage unit holding the being she described as “more powerful, more beautiful and more capable of destroying the Guardians of the Galaxy. I think I shall call him…Adam.”

Gunn added, “And then there were a lot of questions about whether or not we should put that in there, because people were going to expect Adam Warlock in Infinity War. So one of the things I promised — which I do all of the time on Twitter — is letting everyone know that Adam Warlock is not going to be in Avengers 3 or Avengers 4. It’s just not going to happen. Because I didn’t want people to have false expectations of what they thought was going to happen with Adam.”

The character was introduced in 1967 as “Him” in Marvel Comics’ Fantastic Four #66-67 before his name was changed to Adam Warlock in 1972. He was tied to the Soul Gem in the comics, and ran afoul of Thanos, as well as Magus, an evil version of himself from the future.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Vin Diesel as Baby Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, Michael Rooker as Yondu Udonta, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Chris Sullivan as Taserface, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Glenn Close as Irani Rael and Kurt Russell as Ego.
