Han Solo Director Calls Film Dark & Strange

Ever since taking over Disney’s upcoming Han Solo film midway through production, director Ron Howard has not been shy about providing glimpses of the highly-anticipated spinoff. On his Twitter, the filmmaker uploaded a gritty behind-the-scenes look at the film, but his specific word choice may tell fans more about the movie’s tone.

Howard describes the image as a “dark and strange new corner of the Galaxy,” which suggests that the spinoff could feature a darker tone than many would expect from a film centered around a protagonist as cheeky as Han Solo. The ostensibly darker themes driving the film could also provide another bit of insight as to why directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were infamously fired from the project back in June, given the directing duo came from a more comedic background with titles like Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie.

Based on a script by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, the Han Solo spinoff stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, in addition to Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Woody Harrelson. The as-yet-untitled film is scheduled to hit theaters on May 25, 2018.
