Hans Zimmer Will Score X-Men: Dark Phoenix

Despite retiring two years ago from scoring superhero films, Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer will be making his return to the genre with X-Men: Dark Phoenix later this year.

The news was revealed by star Evan Peters, who’s reprising his role as Quicksilver in Simon Kinberg’s directorial debut. It would appear that the news was to be kept secret with Peters, speaking on MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, immediately stating, “I don’t know if I was supposed to say that or not.”

Zimmer, who worked on Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy as well as Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, announced in March 2016 that he was done with the genre after scoring Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice for the DC Extended Universe. He explained that he was tired of the genre at the time.

“I did Batman Begins with Chris [Nolan] 12 years ago, so The Dark Knight Trilogy might be three movies to you, to me it was 11 years of my life,” he said. He also indicated that BvS “was very hard for me to do, to try to find new language.” However, it seems he’s had a change of heart. Zimmer, recently nominated for an Oscar for Nolan’s Dunkirk, will replace John Ottman, who scored X-Men: Apocalypse and its predecessor X-Men: Days of Future Past, to help build Fox’s mutant universe.

This film will retell the influential 1980 epic “The Dark Phoenix Saga” with Sophie Turner returning as Jean Grey, as Fox aims to fix what Brett Ratner did the first time around with Famke Janssen’s Jean as the Dark Phoenix on X-Men: The Last Stand. The original story by Chris Claremont and John Byrne chronicled the fall of the X-Man, driven mad by the enormous power of the cosmic entity known as the Phoenix Force, leading her to destroy a planet before she ultimately sacrifices herself to save the universe.

Arriving in theaters on Nov. 2, 2018, X-Men: Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Nicholas Hoult, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, Olivia Munn and Jessica Chastain.
