Harley’s Arc “Vastly Simplified” in Released Film

Despite Suicide Squad receiving an extended edition home release, director David Ayer says there was more to Harley Quinn’s storyline in his original version.

Ayer tweeted that actor Margot Robbie’s arc as Harley Quinn in the comic book movie was “vastly simplified” and indicated there was was more to her dynamic with Jared Leto’s Joker. He then went on to say that the “released film was very different from original assembly.”

Ayer also talked about the directorial process, writing, “These days directors are treated as figureheads and actually have very little say over the final product. We just don’t talk about it.”

Back in March, the director tweeted there was originally a storyline with Enchantress making a deal with the Clown Prince of Crime to become the “King of Gotham.” However, Harley “stood up to him.” Furthermore, trailers for Suicide Squad included footage that never made it into the extended edition of the film, like Joker’s injured face, so it’s possible that footage may have related to the cuts Ayer is tweeting about.

There is currently no release date for Suicide Squad 2, which was originally slated to begin filming this fall.
