Infinity War Director Calls Adding Marvel TV Heroes ‘Practically Impossible’

Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo has put to bed any hopes that heroes from Marvel’s expansive slate of television programs might cameo in the upcoming film. In a recent interview, the director explained just how difficult such a feat would have been — calling the challenge “practically impossible.”

Russo confirmed that no character from a Marvel TV series would appear in the third Avengers film in an interview with French publication Premiere, citing the already high degree of difficulty in telling a story involving over 60 characters.

“We have considered everything,” Russo said. “But the trick is that we already have at least sixty characters with whom we must tell a story!”

“And it’s hard enough to communicate with Taika Waititi, Ryan Coogler, Scott Derrickson, Peyton Reed and James Gunn at the same time, not to add all the showrunners and TV crews to this,” Russo said. “The latter is also led by totally different people. So it’s practically impossible. Our job is to focus on the Marvel film world and offer a satisfying climax.”

While Russo’s comments may disappoint fans of Marvel’s many TV series, Avengers: Infinity War is already set to be one of the most ambitious crossover films to date. Marvel Studios has devoted a significant amount of time building up to Infinity War, the film being the culmination of nearly 10 years of storytelling that began in 2008 with Iron Man.
