James Gunn-Produced BrightBurn Delayed to 2019

Sony has released the name of and the new release date for the highly-anticipated James Gunn-produced horror project.

The mysterious film will be called BrightBurn, which has now been pushed back from this November to May 24, 2019 to capitalize on the long Memorial Day weekend, one of the most popular spots on the box office calendar.

Fans were expecting details on BrightBurn at Comic-Con International in San Diego last July, but that film panel was canceled after news surfaced that Disney had fired Gunn from its Guardians of the Galaxy franchise because of offensive tweets from the past. The move comes as no surprise as Gunn has gone radio silent since the firing, and Sony has done absolutely no marketing for the movie.

With no plot details revealed thus far, all that’s been made public is that Elizabeth Banks, who starred in Gunn’s Slither, will be starring here, alongside Gunn’s brother, Brian, with James’ cousin Mark Gunn writing the script. David Yarovesky, who directed the 2014 sci-fi flick The Hive, is attached as director for the flick, which has now been replaced by The Possession of Hannah Grace in Sony’s November slot.
