Visual effects artist Robert McKinnon’s concept art for Justice League‘s Themysciran and Atlantean Mother Boxes reveal a high resolution look at the ancient devices that played a major role in the film.
In Justice League, the three Mother Boxes were separated to assure the villain Steppenwolf could not combine their power to bring a mighty cataclysm down on the Earth. Two of the three were given to the Amazons and the Atlanteans (the third is what powers Victor Stone’s cyborg body). McKinnon, who provided early concept art for Justice League, illustrated all three.

The Mother Box located on Wonder Woman’s home of Themyscira boasts the rustic elegance of an Amazon shield. The Atlantean Mother Box uses organic imagery of a sea star fossil to fit perfectly with the sunken city’s visual theme. The concept art, as well as the rest of McKinnon’s work, can be found on his portfolio website.
McKinnon previously contributed to the DC Extended Universe with 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. McKinnon’s work on the film included concept iconography for Batman’s Batsignal, Wonder Woman’s swords and Superman’s black casket.
