Mark Hamill Dispels Myth About His Luke Skywalker Casting

For years now, it’s been suggested that Mark Hamill owes his casting as Luke Skywalker in 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope to Nightmare on Elm Street actor Robert Englund, who was said to have recommended the role to Hamill after having himself auditioned for Han Solo. It was believed that Englund motivated Hamill, who was supposedly sleeping on his couch at the time, to go after the job, but now the Star Wars star has explained what really happened.

Hamill set the record straight with a fan on Twitter, revealing that, by the time Englund told him about the role, his agent had already set up an audition for A New Hope. Hamill’s agent apparently still gets annoyed that Englund takes credit for sending the future Luke to his audition. Hamill also explained that he already had an apartment and wasn’t even sleeping on Englund’s couch when he was informed of Star Wars.
