Despite receiving a series order over a year ago, Marvel’s New Warriors has yet to debut on the small screen. Now, following the cancellation of Roseanne, the show’s cast members have taken to social media to plead their case for why the show is the perfect replacement for the booted sitcom.
Earlier today, stars Milana Vayntrub (Squirrel Girl), Jeremy Tardy (Night Thrasher) and Matthew Moy (Microbe) retweeted an article that explained why New Warriors makes sense as the replacement for a series like Roseanne. While the latter was filled with plenty of questionable moments in its rebooted season — whether in the way it failed to properly address racism or in the way it joked about nonconforming identities — Marvel’s New Warriors has the chance to do something special.

How about a show about a powerful computer scientist girl with one of the most diverse casts on TV and they all just want to make the world a better place? (Don’t mean to make this about me, buuuut the world needs this show.) https://t.co/fy5C5vLqYi

How about putting an African American woman with telekinetic powers on?! Highly trained African American Ninja?! Team them up with Squirrel Girl, Mister Immortal, Speedball and Microbe?!!
Seems like #poeticjustice https://t.co/fTdaIcScQI

What was meant to be Marvel’s first comedy series on television, New Warriors initially received a ten-episode series order from Freeform, the same network that’ll soon be home to fellow Marvel series Cloak and Dagger. However, in a surprising turn of events, the network opted to pass on the series though the pilot was said to have tested through the roof. A new home has yet to be officially announced for the show. It’s been thought Disney may be holding the show for its forthcoming streaming service; however, earlier reports indicated Marvel was keen to bring the series to life this year, as opposed to waiting until 2019. Now, with an open block on ABC, some of the cast members believe the show is the perfect series to fill the void left by Roseanne‘s cancellation.

While it remains unclear what Marvel intends to do with New Warriors, it is worth noting there actually was an opening for next year on ABC prior to the cancellation of Roseanne. Although Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was renewed for a sixth season, the show only received an order for thirteen episodes, with the possibility of more to come at a later time. Given that a show typically airs twenty-two episodes in a season, that leaves an opening for a mid-season series, much like how S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter used to function on the network..
New Warriors centers on six young heroes learning to cope with their abilities in a world where bad guys can be as terrifying as bad dates. The 10-episode series stars Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl, Derek Theler as Mister Immortal, Jeremy Tardy as Night Thrasher, Calum Worthy as Speedball, Matthew Moy as Microbe and Kate Comer as Debrii.
