Snyder Reveals Justice League 2 Reference Hidden in Batman v Superman

It’s no secret that Superman is considered a comic book allegory for Jesus Christ, being a godlike entity sent to Earth as its savior, among the strongest comparisons. Now, director Zack Snyder has revealed an easter egg hidden in plain sight from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that indicated the direction he was potentially heading surrounding the hero’s triumphant return, which was, quite possibly, actually meant for Justice League 2.

In an interaction on the social media platform Vero, a fan notified Snyder of a couple of foreshadowing crosses in the background in Superman’s death scene, which the filmmaker indicated was a reference to the Justice League sequel he envisioned. When the fan expressed delight at the revelation, Snyder then replied: “#untilitwasnt” — most likely alluding to his initial plans to do Justice League as a two-part film, which Warner Bros. eventually ended up saying no to.

In the BvS scene in question, we see Lois holding the dead Kryptonian after the Doomsday battle, with Batman and Wonder Woman also in mourning. Taking Snyder’s words into account here, we can see the seeds (or in this case, debris forming crosses) sewn that allude to Superman not being meant to return in Justice League as he did, but instead in its sequel. This hints that Snyder initially planned the first movie to end with the Leaguers barely surviving the onslaught of Steppenwolf, and further indicating that Superman’s delayed return was most likely planned to sway the tide once more and even to fight Darkseid himself in the follow-up.

Snyder’s banter continues what seems to be a long-existing tension with him and the studio, which recently hit a high after the disappointing critical and box office returns of Justice League. This has also led to fans still requesting a Snyder cut of the film, which failed to meld his vision with that of Joss Whedon’s.

Available now on digital HD, Blu-ray and DVD, Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Ciarán Hinds as Steppenwolf, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon.
