Steve Carell’s First TV Role Since The Office Is Apple Drama

Steve Carell is returning to television in a decidedly different workplace series.

The iconic star of The Office has signed on as the lead of Apple’s upcoming, still untitled project. The series is based on CNN media correspondent Brian Stelter’s book Top of the Morning, which examined the modern rivalry between warring morning shows Today and Good Morning America. The show may not have a name yet, but Carell’s character does: Mitch Kessler, “a morning show anchor who is struggling to maintain relevance in a changing media landscape.”

The show may still be in pre-production, but it already has quite a bit of buzz. Apropos for a show examining a changing media landscape, it’s the first show bought by Apple in a recent effort to expand into creating original television content, with two seasons already ordered. Carell joins Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon (who are also producing the series) on the cast, while Kerry Ehrin (Friday Night Lights, Bates Motel) serves as showrunner.

Only time will tell if Mitch Kessler will be as iconic as Michael Scott.
