William Shatner Would Return For Tarantino’s Star Trek Movie

Patrick Stewart has already said he’d be interested in returning to the Enterprise for director Quentin Tarantino’s planned Star Trek movie, and now another Starfleet captain has expressed his interest as well.

Franchise icon William Shatner, the original James T. Kirk, said he wouldn’t turn down an offer, as long as the screenplay was solid. “Depends on the script but if it was good then absolutely,” the actor wrote on Twitter, in response to a fan question. “Why not?”

Shatner debuted as Captain Kirk on the 1966 television series, and reprised the role first on the short-lived Star Trek: The Animated Series, and then in seven feature films, the last being 1994’s Star Trek Generations. He’s also lent his voice to a handful of franchise video games and audiobooks. Shatner revealed in 2014 that he was approached to appear in the third film in the reboot franchise, but obviously nothing ever came of that. And in 2016, he said he’d “absolutely” be interested in returning as an older Kirk, as long as it was an interesting role, and more than a mere cameo.

Tarantino’s Star Trek is still in the early stages of development. So far, it has a story idea and a writer, Mark L. Smith (The Revenant), but little else. One thing is for certain, and that’s the film will be rated R, which would be a first for the franchise.
