Wonder Woman Animated Movie Announced For 2019

Director Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984 won’t be the only movie next year starring the iconic DC heroine.

Although there are typically just three DC Universe Movies released each year, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced Thursday night at Comic-Con International that Wonder Woman: Bloodlines will join a 2019 animated slate that already boasts Reign of the Superman, Batman: Hush and Justice League vs. The Fatal Five.

No additional details were released, but presumably Bloodlines will arrive ahead of the Nov. 1 premiere of the live-action Wonder Woman sequel, starring Gal Gadot, Chris Pine and Kristen Wiig.

The character’s last animated solo outing was in the 2009 direct-to-DVD film Wonder Woman, starring Keri Russell and Nathan Fillion, loosely based on the 1987 comic book arc “Gods and Monsters” by George Perez, Greg Potter and Len Wein. Although the movie received largely positive reviews, sluggish sales led Warner Bros. to abandon plans not only for a sequel but for other female-led animated features.

“The execs decided because it wasn’t able to sell quickly right away, where as Justice League [Frontier] was, that there wouldn’t be any more female superhero films right now,” Warner Bros. Animation veteran Bruce Timm said in a 2010 interview. “We were developing, and hoping to get started, on a Batgirl film based on ‘Year One,’ but because of Wonder Woman’s slow sales start, that won’t be happening now.”

Of course, that was eight years ago, long before Warner Bros. found success with its DC Super Hero Girls franchise, and before the blockbuster performance of 2017’s Wonder Woman.

In fact, Warner Bros. Animation supervising producer James Tucker teased at New York Comic Con 2016 that another Wonder Woman animated project might be on the horizon, in the wake of Gadot’s breakout performance of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
