Crowned Miss World America in 1972, Carter was catapulted to international fame when she was cast as the DC Comics icon in the 1975-1979 Wonder Woman TV series, replacing Cathy Lee Crosby. The show aired for three seasons, first on ABC and then on CBS, and left a lasting mark on popular culture.

Following Wonder Woman, Carter continued her career as a singer and actress, releasing a handful of studio albums, and appearing in dozens of TV and movie roles — perhaps most notably as Principal Powers on Sky High and President Olivia Marsdin on Supergirl. She’s also lent her voice to the Elder Scrolls video game series.

Carter, 66, is also an advocate for children’s charities, women’s health initiatives and the LGBTQ community, including God’s Love We Deliver, GLAAD and the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

She attended the world premiere of Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, but, contrary to persistent rumors, didn’t have a cameo in the film. However, the director said she still hopes Carter will be able to appear in the 2019 sequel.
