Drew Goddard’s X-Force film is still in development.
In the wake of Disney’s massive buyout of 21st Century Fox’s major assets, a new report from Discussing Film indicates that Drew Goddard will remain on board to write and direct the upcoming X-Force film. The film centering on a black-ops squad of Marvel mutants was one of the many 21st Century Fox projects gained by Disney (which also owns Marvel) in a landmark acquisition.
Goddard is no stranger to Marvel projects — he created Netflix’s Daredevil series, effectively kicking off Marvel’s run of Netflix shows. He’s also written a slew successful films including cult hit Cabin in the Woods (which he also directed) and Oscar-nominated The Martian.
X-Force is a property whose rights are held by 20th Century Fox, the film division of 21st Century Fox that will reportedly be acquired by Disney. It’s a bold move that could potentially see Deadpool (and pretty much any mutant) pop up in an Avengers film one day.
Upon the announcement of the acquisition, Disney released a statement expressing excitement over the prospect of merging the cinematic universes. “[The deal] provides Disney with the opportunity to reunite the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool with the Marvel family under one roof and create richer, more complex worlds of inter-related characters and stories that audiences have shown they love.”
X-Force does not yet have an official release date. Deadpool will next appear in Deadpool 2, which hits theaters on June 1 and stars Ryan Reynolds, T.J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand, Karan Soni and Leslie Uggams, along with newcomers Josh Brolin as Cable and Zazie Beetz as Domino.
